We have exciting new opportunities for Civil Field Engineer Technicians to join our Central Iowa Operations. We are flexible with the base office of our new hires being selected from either Ames or Des Moines office locations.

The Civil Engineer Technician is responsible for performing construction observation on complex municipal projects. This position will consist of construction observation, testing, and detailed documentation of municipal projects throughout the Central Iowa area. Daily travel will be required.  You will work with plans and perform inspection on projects dealing with maintenance and construction of streets, sewers, storm sewers, and water mains; determine if material and work meets specifications; includes related surveying duties.

The Civil Engineer Technician must possess a high capacity for self-motivation and be able to apply technical knowledge to a variety of projects. In addition, must be able to develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and staff from various agencies.

Primary Duties

  • Construction observation, which may include but are not limited to, recording quantities and progress of construction activities, providing oversight of materials testing
  • Traveling to work sites and other project related locations
  • Interacting with contractors, sub-contractors, city staff and residents, fielding questions, and providing information on projects
  • Other duties may include performing routine engineering computations, researching engineer records, operating AutoCAD Civil 3D and other engineering software to assist with preliminary design of municipal projects and construction plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, or related field,  from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience as an engineer technician
  • Additional, related experience may be considered in lieu of the formal education requirement
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and their own transportation
  • Must have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to read, speak and write English clearly is required

Preferred skills

  • Experience in complex plan production
  • Experience in construction contract administration
  • Experience working with city government and municipal infrastructure
  • Experience with Federal and State aid documentation
  • Construction staking or field survey experience
  • Design experience or training with AutoDesk software
  • We desire the following IDOT certifications: PCC I, Level I Agg, and HMA Sampler
